Tafsir of Ibn Kathir

"The most authentic tafsir on the Quran"

Quennel Gale

The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir is the most authentic commentary on the Quran outside the Sahih Hadiths. For people who are new to Islam, the Quran is the Muslim Holy Scripture that was dictated to the prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. The Sahih Hadiths are the authentic “traditions” or “sayings” of Muhammad outside the Quran. The Hadith (singular) interprets the Quran and is considered the basis of Islamic sharia law along with the Quran. Islam like Christianity is based upon several sources, its primary holy scripture- the Quran, the actions of its apostle- Muhammad, the words and actions of Muhammad’s companions, biographies of Muhammad-Ibn Ishaq, Tabari, along with tafsirs or commentary on the Quran- Ibn Kathir.

If you put these sources in the order of importance in Islam it would be like this:

1. Quran
2. Hadith
3. Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hashim Biography of Muhammad
4. Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir’s commentary or tafsir is considered standard and virtually absolute in interpreting the Quran over any tafsir. It draws on all of the previous sources, the Quran, hadith and biographies of Muhammad. It is the most popular commentary in the Arab and Islamic world and it holds preeminence over any Islamic scholar’s opinion or any Muslim apologist in today’s modern world.

All true scholars of Islam, whether official or laymen must and should be familiar with its contents as much as they should be familiar with the contents of the Quran, hadith and biographies of Muhammad. Ibn Kathir’s commentary is considered authentic sources of Islam. If one wants to learn the true message and teachings of Islam one must consult the Quran, Hadith, biographies of Muhammad and this tafsir and supplement any other relevant Islamic information in accordance to the previous mentioned.

True Islam is learned from the sources of Islam not the modern day scholars and apologists who can hide and distort teachings unsuitable to their liking.
